Resumen
Many years ago, but not that many, a settlement existed along a lake in northern Guatemala. It was on the edge of a large, dense forest. the people would obtain leases from the government to grow small patches of corn there, which was an important part of their livelihood. Maya people lived from the forest for generations. Juan, the relator of this story, loved the way of life of his people and wanted to continue it by being a forest farmer, a milpero, like his father and grandfather. His biggest ambition was to be old enough to accompany his father and his two older brothers to one of their milpas and learn how to be a milpero. As he tells his story, we also discover how these people live, how they think, what is important to them, and how they interact one with the other. This life is rapidly disappearing.
