Resumen . (1920–), American fiction writer, born in Seattle, Washington. She attended Western Washington College and the University of Washington in Seattle. Despite her early writing experiences—a column in the local newspaper when she was sixteen, a stint with a humor magazine in college—she had no intention of making a career as a writer, but her work as a teacher and counselor with junior high students gave her a strong interest in the age group and a background to draw on. The author of over a dozen titles, DeClements is best known for her accessible and empathetic novels describing life as an adolescent. Her first book, Nothing's Fair in Fifth Grade (1981), which featured a protagonist to whom DeClements would return in later works, vividly portrayed adolescent vulnerability to peer-group disdain. The novel won several state children's choice awards, and DeClements's other titles have also been well received, with several garnering International Reading Association awards. When fat Elsie Edwards walks into Jenny Sawyer's fifth grade class, she's the last person Jenny expects to be friendly with. Elsie is not only fat, she steals everyone's lunch money tu buy candy. And when the book club money disappears, the whole class is punished. Nothing's fair! The teacher, Mrs. Hanson, is very strict. Fractions are impossible. And Jenny is assigned as Elsie's guide in school. Nothing's fair! But Elsie turns out to be a math genius. She helps Jenny learn fractions. Elsie's diet begins to work. Then Jenny land her friends discover that Elsie's fat really covers up a good friend. Nothing's fair-but some things are not as bad as they seem!
